In October, Lima honours El Señor de los Milagros (the Lord of Miracles), an image of the crucified Christ painted by a young Angolan slave that has remained intact, even after the earthquakes of 1655 and 1687. Every year since then, tens of thousands of Peruvians, many dressed in purple, have taken to the streets to escort the pious image that is carried in procession. Men, women, and children sing hymns, while the elderly watch from the balconies and throw flowers from above.
This inclusive religious festival brings together rich and poor, white and black to share the same religious sentiment. This is one of the biggest processions in the world.
